Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highland Dancing Association

2023 Sep

On June 23rd, 1964 the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highland Dancing Association was born with 30 families and 35 dancers. Currently there are over 80 members that celebrated their 50th anniversary a few years ago. This Association remains a non-profit that carries on the Scottish heritage of their ancestors.

The dancing competitions of this association attract dancers from Montreal, Toronto and New York State to the delight of the large crowds in attendance.

The members of the SD&G Highland Dancing Association are recognised around the world as “the ones to watch.” Over the years they have been Ontario champions, Canadian champions, North American champions and World champions.

Three local teachers deserve much credit: Kathy Coleman-Spink of Glengarry County, Ellen Cameron Maloney of Stormont County and Colleen Murray-St. Onge of Glengarry County. These teachers are often approached to do workshops throughout Ontario, Canada and USA.

The SD&G Highland Dancing Association has shared their love of dance at Retirement homes, St. Andrew’s Day celebrations, schools, fairs, fundraisers and talent shows. The Association is made up of volunteers that work tirelessly. There are eight committed members on the executive. At each indoor competition one school is appointed to run a kitchen, another to set up/clean up and scrutinise and yet another to line up the competitors and look after the 50/50 raffle.

The SD&G Highland Dancing Association deserves to be inducted into the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame for their longstanding commitment to a safe, fair and welcoming place to compete in the sport of Highland Dancing!
